Resumen: El llamado “caso Schreber” es uno de los textos más visitados, tanto por la tradición psicoanalítica como por los distintos debates interdisciplinares que se entretejen alrededor de él. En el interior de la abundante riqueza de lecturas filosóficas, literarias, clínicas y otras, hay un aspecto al que, sorprendentemente, se le ha prestado poca atención, a saber, la relación entre el delirio de Daniel Paul Schreber y el forjamiento, del lado de Sigmund Freud, de una teoría no solo de la (...) psicosis como estructura clínica, sino también de las fuerzas y dinamismos que rigen el funcionamiento del aparato anímico, la llamada teoría pulsional [Trieblehre]. En este artículo se discute esta relación de la mano del análisis comparativo de la noción de “mito endopsíquico”, que atravesará los campos del delirio schreberiano y de la metapsicología freudiana, para evidenciar en ambos dominios, mediante una serie de relaciones de analogía e isomorfismo, los elementos cruciales de una representación de la vida como de-vivir, es decir, como desgaste o degradación de las poderes de lo viviente.: The so-called “Schreber case” is one of the most visited texts, both by the psychoanalytic tradition and by the interdisciplinary debates intertwined around it. Within the abundant richness of philosophical, literary, clinical, and other readings, one aspect has surprisingly been given little attention, namely, the relationship between the Daniel Paul Schreber delirium and the forging, by Sigmund Freud, of a theory of psychosis as a clinical structure and also of the forces and dynamisms that rule the functioning of the psychic apparatus, the so-called drive theory {Trieblehre}. In this article, this relationship is discussed through a comparative analysis of the notion of “endopsychic myth” in the fields of Schreberian delirium and of Freudian metapsychology, in order to show in both domains, using a series of relations of analogy and isomorphism, the crucial elements of a representation of life as a “dis-living”, that is, as a wear or degradation of the powers of all living matter. En el presente artículo se analiza la relación problemática que el filósofo francés Gilbert Simondon establece entre la materia inerte y la materia viviente en el marco de su teoría de la individuación. Se intenta evidenciar que, pese a los esfuerzos teóricos de Simondon por fundar la naturaleza de la vida en el orden de los fenómenos inorgánicos o físico-químicos, los procesos de individuación vital dan lugar a modos de funcionamiento, estructuras y dinamismos que no tienen precedentes en la materia (...) inanimada, hecho que autoriza una definición de la vida como pura diferencia respecto de sí. The current times call for reforms in educational processes. The Covid-19 pandemic had an unforeseen impact on the educational system in all countries. This need for change requires new pedagogies and new methods for teaching and learning. Understanding the need for change is essential for the formulation of adaptive proposals, as well as for the generation of training activities to complement the teaching curriculum. This article investigates the relationship between emotional sharing and the extended mind thesis. We argue that shared emotions are socially extended emotions that involve a specific type of constitutive integration between the participating individuals’ emotional experiences. We start by distinguishing two claims, the Environmentally Extended Emotion Thesis and the Socially Extended Emotion Thesis. We then critically discuss some recent influential proposals about the nature of shared emotions. Finally, in Sect. 3, we motivate two conditions that an account of shared emotions (...) ought to accommodate: Reciprocal Other-awareness and Integration. Consideration of and discussion of relational accounts of joint attention lead us to the proposal that a construal of socially extended emotions in terms of a constitutive integration of the participating individuals’ experiences is more promising than proposals that simply appeal to various forms of social situatedness, embeddedness, or scaffolding. Replicability is widely taken to ground the epistemic authority of science. However, in recent years, important published findings in the social, behavioral, and biomedical sciences have failed to replicate, suggesting that these fields are facing a “replicability crisis.” For philosophers, the crisis should not be taken as bad news but as an opportunity to do work on several fronts, including conceptual analysis, history and philosophy of science, research ethics, and social epistemology. This article introduces philosophers to these discussions. First, I (...) discuss precedents and evidence for the crisis. Second, I discuss methodological, statistical, and social-structural factors that have contributed to the crisis. Third, I focus on the philosophical issues raised by the crisis. The reward system of science is the priority rule. The first scientist making a new discovery is rewarded with prestige, while second runners get little or nothing. Michael Strevens, following Philip Kitcher, defends this reward system, arguing that it incentivizes an efficient division of cognitive labor. I argue that this assessment depends on strong implicit assumptions about the replicability of findings. I question these assumptions on the basis of metascientific evidence and argue that the priority rule systematically discourages replication. Neste trabalho, investigo a possibilidade de compatibilidade entre o pessimismo filosófico e a compreensão da morte como um mal para quem morre. Por pessimismo filosófico, compreendo a doutrina filosófica que mantém como tese fundamental que a não-existência é preferível à existência, de modo que o pessimismo é tomado como a filosofia de que a vida não vale a pena ser vivida. Por mal da morte, me refiro à compreensão da morte como um dano para o indivíduo que morre, cujo pressuposto (...) em diferentes abordagens contemporâneas é o de que a morte só é um mal no caso de continuar existindo ser preferível a deixar de existir. Desse modo, o problema discutido é a aparente incompatibilidade entre a tese de que a não-existência é preferível à existência e a tese de que continuar existindo é preferível a deixar de existir. Busco demonstrar que essa (in)compatibilidade depende do modo como fundamentamos o pessimismo filosófico. Para tanto, examino dois argumentos para o pessimismo filosófico e suas implicações para o mal da morte: o argumento a priori de Arthur Schopenhauer e o argumento da assimetria de David Benatar. Concluo que o primeiro desses argumentos nos leva para a conclusão de que a morte não é um mal, mas que o segundo argumento compatibiliza o pessimismo filosófico e a compreensão da morte como um mal para quem morre. The experimental interventions that provide evidence of causal relations are notably similar to those that provide evidence of constitutive relevance relations. In the first two sections, I show that this similarity creates a tension: there is an inconsistent triad between Woodward’s popular interventionist theory of causation, Craver’s mutual manipulability account of constitutive relevance in mechanisms, and a variety of arguments for the incoherence of inter-level causation. I argue for an interpretation of the views in which the tension is merely apparent. (...) I propose to explain inter-level relations without inter-level causation by appealing to the notion of fat-handed interventions, and an argument against inter-level causation which dissolves the problem. Advocates of the self-corrective thesis argue that scientific method will refute false theories and find closer approximations to the truth in the long run. I discuss a contemporary interpretation of this thesis in terms of frequentist statistics in the context of the behavioral sciences. First, I identify experimental replications and systematic aggregation of evidence (meta-analysis) as the self-corrective mechanism. Then, I present a computer simulation study of scientific communities that implement this mechanism to argue that frequentist statistics may converge upon (...) a correct estimate or not depending on the social structure of the community that uses it. Based on this study, I argue that methodological explanations of the “replicability crisis” in psychology are limited and propose an alternative explanation in terms of biases. Finally, I conclude suggesting that scientific self-correction should be understood as an interaction effect between inference methods and social structures. (shrink)

This collection highlights the new trend away from rationalism and toward empiricism in the epistemology of modality. Accordingly, the book represents a wide range of positions on the empirical sources of modal knowledge. Readers will find an introduction that surveys the field and provides a brief overview of the work, which progresses from empirically-sensitive rationalist accounts to fully empiricist accounts of modal knowledge. Early chapters focus on challenges to rationalist theories, essence-based approaches to modal knowledge, and the prospects for naturalizing (...) modal epistemology. The middle chapters present positive accounts that reject rationalism, but which stop short of advocating exclusive appeal to empirical sources of modal knowledge. The final chapters mark a transition toward exclusive reliance on empirical sources of modal knowledge. They explore ways of making similarity-based, analogical, inductive, and abductive arguments for modal claims based on empirical information. On a widely held characterization, triadic joint attention is the capacity to perceptually attend to an object or event together with another subject. In the last four decades, research in developmental psychology has provided increasing evidence of the crucial role that this capacity plays in socio-cognitive development, early language acquisition, and the development of perspective-taking. Yet, there is a striking discrepancy between the general agreement that joint attention is critical in various domains, and the lack of theoretical consensus on how (...) to account for it. This paper pursues three interrelated aims: (i) it examines the contrast between reductive and non-reductive views of (triadic) joint attention, by bringing into focus the notion of recursive mindreading; (ii) it assembles, advances, and discusses a number of arguments against reductive views; (iii) finally, in dialogue with some prominent non-reductive views, it outlines the case for a non-reductive view that gives pride of place to the idea that co-attenders relate to one another as a ‘you’. This paper contains two sections. In the first one, some ideas on human mind Dennett presents in his book Consciousness Explained are sketched. In the second section, a critical review is made on Dennett's Multiple Drafts Theory. It is concluded that some of its proposals do not find enough experimental support from research on Cognitive Neuroscience. Even though there is no cardinal point in the brain, both functional and anatomical criteria can be found to distinguish conscious and unconscious information processing (...) in the human brain. Oversimplified conceptions of cognitive neuroscience regard the goal of this discipline as the localization of previously discovered and validated cognitive processes. Research however is showing how brain data goes far beyond this translation role, as it can be used to help in explaining human cognition. Knowing about the brain is useful in building and redefining taxonomies of the mind and also in describing the mechanisms by which cognitive phenomena proceed. The present paper takes the cognitive system of attention as a (...) model research field to exemplify how biological knowledge can be used to advance the psychological theories explaining mental phenomena. Wachsein ist in der abendlandischen Philosophie ein Randthema. In psychologischem und medizinischem Kontext ist das Wachsein meist nur Thema in der Perspektive der dritten Person: Man beschreibt, wie sich andere verhalten, wenn sie wach sind. Dieses Buch halt sich an die Perspektive der ersten Person. Es geht um das subjektive Erleben, darum, wie es fur mich ist, wach zu sein. Das ist uns vertraut und gerade deswegen fremd und unbefragt. Zumeist hintergrundig bewusst, wird es erst explizit, wenn das Erleben gestort (...) wird. Im Zentrum steht die These, es fuhle sich irgendwie an, wach zu sein. Wachsein bestehe in unterschiedlichen Gefuhlen bestimmter Struktur, die man als "Selbstgefuhle" bezeichnen kann, weil ich in ihnen in strengerem Sinn auf mich bezogen bin als in anderen Gefuhlen. Eine Theorie der Gefuhle, die auf Brentano und Meinong zuruckgeht, nach der Gefuhle Modifikationen von Strebungen sind, macht dies verstandlich und zeigt, wie sich Gefuhle des Wachseins von anderen Gefuhlen unterscheiden. Die Philosophische Bedeutung des Wachseins resultiert aus den Beziehungen zu einigen klassischen Problemen der Philosophie: zum Selbstbewusstsein, zur freien Entscheidung sowie zum Ursprung des Bewusstseins. Zudem bildet es das Medium, in dem uns etwas bewusst ist. Wir mussen nicht wissen, was Wachsein ist, um wach zu sein, aber dieses Wissen ist unverzichtbar fur das Selbstverstandnis von uns als Menschen. (shrink)

The enduring replication crisis in many scientific disciplines casts doubt on the ability of science to estimate effect sizes accurately, and in a wider sense, to self-correct its findings and to produce reliable knowledge. We investigate the merits of a particular countermeasure—replacing null hypothesis significance testing with Bayesian inference—in the context of the meta-analytic aggregation of effect sizes. In particular, we elaborate on the advantages of this Bayesian reform proposal under conditions of publication bias and other methodological imperfections that are (...) typical of experimental research in the behavioral sciences. Moving to Bayesian statistics would not solve the replication crisis single-handedly. However, the move would eliminate important sources of effect size overestimation for the conditions we study. Resumen Este artículo explora el concepto de corrupción siguiendo la categoría nietzscheana de decadencia en los ámbitos religiosos, morales, metafísicos y epistémicos en el horizonte del nihilismo. El campo de interés estuvo centrado en la constante presencia de la decadencia como elemento definitorio de nuestra cultura occidental según el diagnóstico genealógico nietzscheano. Sobre la base del análisis hermenéutico de las obras de Nietzsche, se evidenció que la corrupción no solo rompe la confianza como pilar antropológico y político, sino que quiebra (...) la promesa como fundamento teológico y filosófico, y reemplaza el ethos de convivencia por el pathos de la sospecha. Se concluye que esta cualidad de corruptibilidad del hombre surge en la actualidad como una condición causal en la arquitectónica del abuso y para el crecimiento decisivo de un nuevo tipo de nihilismo: el nihilismo de la consciencia.This article explores the concept of corruption following the Nietzschean category of decadence in the religious, moral, metaphysical and epistemic realms in the horizon of nihilism. The focus was the constant presence of decadence as a defining element in our Western culture according to the Nietzschean genealogical diagnosis. Based on the hermeneutic analysis of Nietzsche's works, it is demonstrated that corruption not only breaks down trust as a pillar of anthropology and politics, but it also breaks promise as a theological and philosophical basis and replaces the ethos of cohabitation with the pathos of suspicion. It is concluded that this quality of man's corruptibility arises as a causal condition in the architecture of abuse and for the decisive growth of a new type of nihilism: the nihilism of consciousness. The present article locates the figurative character of the hermeneutics in the thinking of Nietzsche. For this, it is necessary to have a particular perspective that makes a character (a real, literary, historical or philosophical one, etc.) a figure of interpretation that neither shows things metaphysically nor it is directed towards them by means of a phenomena. Instead, it revives them symbolically, inspiring a new wave of hermeneutics for interpretation and a new angle for comprehension. The main function is its relatedness as a background on which the imperceptible connection stands out. That makes a hermeneutic figure the center or an axis of vibrations that move its discursive and critical components, crossing with impertinence the boundaries of the interpreted and the imaginary. Resumen Este artículo explora el concepto de corrupción siguiendo la categoría nietzscheana de decadencia en los ámbitos religiosos, morales, metafísicos y epistémicos en el horizonte del nihilismo. El campo de interés estuvo centrado en la constante presencia de la decadencia como elemento definitorio de nuestra cultura occidental según el diagnóstico genealógico nietzscheano. Sobre la base del análisis hermenéutico de las obras de Nietzsche, se evidenció que la corrupción no solo rompe la confianza como pilar antropológico y político, sino que quiebra (...) la promesa como fundamento teológico y filosófico, y reemplaza el ethos de convivencia por el pathos de la sospecha. Se concluye que esta cualidad de corruptibilidad del hombre surge en la actualidad como una condición causal en la arquitectónica del abuso y para el crecimiento decisivo de un nuevo tipo de nihilismo: el nihilismo de la consciencia.This article explores the concept of corruption following the Nietzschean category of decadence in the religious, moral, metaphysical and epistemic realms in the horizon of nihilism. The focus was the constant presence of decadence as a defining element in our Western culture according to the Nietzschean genealogical diagnosis. Based on the hermeneutic analysis of Nietzsche's works, it is demonstrated that corruption not only breaks down trust as a pillar of anthropology and politics, but it also breaks promise as a theological and philosophical basis and replaces the ethos of cohabitation with the pathos of suspicion. It is concluded that this quality of man's corruptibility arises as a causal condition in the architecture of abuse and for the decisive growth of a new type of nihilism: the nihilism of consciousness. The enduring replication crisis in many scientific disciplines casts doubt on the ability of science to estimate effect sizes accurately, and in a wider sense, to self-correct its findings and to produce reliable knowledge. We investigate the merits of a particular countermeasure—replacing null hypothesis significance testing with Bayesian inference—in the context of the meta-analytic aggregation of effect sizes. In particular, we elaborate on the advantages of this Bayesian reform proposal under conditions of publication bias and other methodological imperfections that are (...) typical of experimental research in the behavioral sciences. Moving to Bayesian statistics would not solve the replication crisis single-handedly. However, the move would eliminate important sources of effect size overestimation for the conditions we study. While most people believe the best possible life they could lead would be an immortal one, so‐called “immortality curmudgeons” disagree. Following Bernard Williams, they argue that, at best, we have no prudential reason to live an immortal life, and at worst, an immortal life would necessarily be bad for creatures like us. In this article, we examine Bernard Williams' seminal argument against the desirability of immortality and the subsequent literature it spawned. We first reconstruct and motivate Williams' somewhat cryptic argument (...) in three parts. After that, we elucidate and motivate the three best (and most influential) counterarguments to Williams' seminal argument. Finally, we review, and critically examine, two further distinct arguments in favor of the anti‐immortality position. (shrink)

. Scientists, for the most part, want to get it right. However, the social structures that govern their work undermine that aim, and this leads to nonreplicable findings in many fields. Because the social structure of science is a decentralized system, it is difficult to intervene. In this article, I discuss how we might do so, focusing on self-corrective-labor schemes. First, I argue that we need to implement a scheme that makes replication work outcome independent, systematic, and sustainable. Second, I (...) use these three criteria to evaluate extant proposals, which place the responsibility for replication on original researchers, consumers of their research, students, or many labs. Third, on the basis of a philosophical analysis of the reward system of science and the benefits of the division of cognitive labor, I propose a scheme that satisfies the criteria better: the professional scheme. This scheme has two main components. First, the scientific community is organized into two groups: discovery researchers, who produce new findings, and confirmation researchers, whose primary function is to do confirmation work. Second, a distinct reward system is established for confirmation researchers so that their career advancement is separated from whether they obtain positive experimental results. (shrink)
